japanese cooking

Finally went to Kinokuniya on Friday. Got what I wanted and found out the information I wanted as well. I may decide to make another trip to Kino again this week. The very nice person at the counter informed me of their shipment of magazines, so I now have the very specific dates of when I should go get my magazines. They apparently have two different kind of shipments, which is either by sea or air and different titles arrive in either one of the two. My favorite magazine, out of the many others, would arrive by sea, and that would be on Fridays. The shipments arrive on every last Wednesday and Friday of the month for the following month's issue, so...this means next month's WinkUp is available this very week itself! The magazine that I so, badly, really, absolutely, wanted to get when I was in Singapore.

Anyway, I went to Isetan Kino, check out a few Japanese dishes, and then went to the main Kino and started browsing through books. I love the atmosphere at Kino. It's just so nice, comfy, cosy and book-ish feely. There were loads of people there but it didn't felt stuffy or overcrowded either. The extensive titles of books available is like a book-heaven. Anything and everything, for all subjects you could think of. I love Kino! Lol.

So, the magazine that made me went all the way to KL city and back...

The main reason as to why I wanted this issue so much:

Somehow, I really like this photoshoot alot. They don't look too casual, but not too over-dressed either. They just look...perfect, especially Yuichi. Why is it guys that I know can't pull of such styles but they can? In fact, most guys I see on the streets, etc. can't pull of this style either...

On another topic, I spent 4 hours plus today cooking. Seriously. 4+ hours. It's extremely tiring and I feel like I've exerted too much energy. Lol. I was trying to cook a few Japanese dishes cause one; I just wanted to, two; my brother was home so I wanted to let him try some as well, and three;Mel's birthday is coming up and I plan to cook for her so I needed to try the dishes out first before actually cooking for her. The results? Well, I would say that I did pretty well, especially for a first time in these dishes. It didn't turn out bad, though presentation-wise I could have actually done much better if I actually remembered to prepare the garnishing and not just rely on last-minute ones. Most important of all, it's edible!

The 'bento' I prepared for my brother so he could bring it back to his university and share with his girlfriend.

Onigiri (also known as Japanese rice balls) with tuna-mayo filling, along with stir-fried pork with ginger and cabbage in the foil-thingie. I love the Onigiri the best cause it's in the perfect round ball shape and it actually sticked together perfectly without the filling dropping out or whatever. Though I'm very much well aware that carrots aren't exactly the nicest looking garnishing for this. I needed to separate the stir fried pork from the Onigiri, so I had to make a small bowl-like container from the foil, added a small plastic to prevent leakage of the sauce, before scooping the contents in. All that work, just for my brother cause he was complaining that it will leak, then it will go to the rice balls, etc, etc.

Rice and mushroom egg parcels. Okay, this one has a very bad presentation I know, cause the omelete was too thick, so it looks incredibly bulky. But it's still nice! And from this recipe I discovered that sesame seeds are delicious when mixed together with eggs! It's so good! And sprinkling it onto the omelete makes the omelete taste even nicer and crispier-like.

This, is Mushroom and tofu miso soup. And yeah, it does look freakish but again, it's edible and it's still pretty okay. Not too salty or weird-tasting either. The color looks so dark cause my miso was the organic miso from Japan which already had a dark color. So mixing it with the light brown-ish dashi stock made it even darker.

The reason it took me about 4+ hours was cause I had prepared almost everything from scratch. Well, somewhat there. The tuna-mayo for the Onigiri was prepared with tuna, mayo and Japanese soy sauce, not those ready-made tuna-mayo kind. While the dashi stock was cooked using dried bonito flakes, konbu seaweed, instead of using the instant granules available in the supermarket. Then there was the rice where I had to cook it accordingly and all. The whole cooking process...was really tiring. But I would say it was still pretty fun. Mom says that after cooking a few times, I should be able to get the hang of it. I'm hoping to be able to make steamed egg custard, known as chawan mushi, next. For Mags, since I know she loves the dish so much.

With my magazine completely done on Friday evening itself, I had the weekend worry-free which was what made me so incredibly happy. Lol. I like not having anything bogging me down. Worries and problems just kills the mind and heart. Also, Nishikado kept coming into mind so I went to search for a few images of him and really, he looks so good! Even when he doesn't smile.

I came to know of him because of KAT-TUN but really noticed him while watching 1 Litre of Tears (which really, makes you cry litres of tears!). He didn't stood out that much but it did got me curious. Not bad singing voice either, though I hardly listen much to NEWS or Kanjani8 anyway.

I got a new scrapbook from Isetan as well, which I'm going to start my new entry later. I love scrapbooks cause you can just anything you want, sticking, pasting, drawing. Also, when I went to Isetan's stationery section, it somehow made me feel really happy. Like a kid who was given a huge cookies and cream flavored ice cream. Stationery makes me happy. Weird yes, but really, it just makes me happy. I love to look at the notebooks, the many different types of it with different lines and designs, multi-colored pens, etc. Books and magazines make me equally happy as well. The smell of new books or certain magazines with their glossy colorful pages...they just make me grin in delight. Well as weird and freaky as it all sounds, at least I get 'high' over books, stationery and artistes (like KAT-TUN, Shinhwa....etc) instead of getting 'high' on alcohol, drugs, etc. I think that's one thing my parents are actually glad about-that I can get all happy & occupied with cutesy-stuff, funny foods, music artistes, books...instead of choosing to go out at night with hell knows who, karaoke, clubbing, etc. Not that all the aforementioned are bad, but my parents just don't really trust such hanging-out activities I guess.
